WHAT IS CORONARY ARTERY BYPASS GRAFTING (CABG)?

CABG is a major operation where you are put under general anesthesia. The chest is opened and blood vessels harvested from other parts of your body are attached with one end above and the other end below the narrowed portion of the diseased coronary artery. It is like creating a “Flyover” or “Road detour” to allow smooth flow of traffic and bypass road blockages caused by heavy traffic or damaged roads.
CABG surgery does not treat the underlying heart disease that caused the blockages. This disease is referred to as atherosclerosis which causes the Coronary Artery Disease (CAD).
The duration of the procedure lasts about 2-3 hours, and begins after general anesthesia is induced. During the course of the procedure, patients are in deep sleep.
Possible risks of coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG) may include:
- Bleeding during or after the surgery
- Blood clots that can cause heart attack, stroke, or lung problems
- Infection at the incision site
- Pneumonia
- Breathing problems
- Pancreatitis
- Kidney failure
- Abnormal heart rhythms
- Failure of the graft
- Death
There may be other risks depending on your specific medical condition. Be sure to discuss any concerns with your doctor before the procedure.
A patient typically stays in the hospital from 3 to 8 days after the procedure. The amount of time you stay varies and will depend on your health before bypass surgery and whether complications develop from surgery.
Expect a recovery period of about six to 12 weeks. In most cases, you can resume your day-to-day activities after four to six weeks, but with the prescription and recommendation of your doctor.
WHY DO YOU NEED TO UNDERGO CABG?
Not sure if you need to undergo CABG? Here are some symptoms to look out for.
You have severe chest pain due to narrowing or blockages of several of the blood vessels in your heart, leading to insufficient supply of blood to the heart.
You have more than one diseased coronary artery and the heart’s main pumping chamber- the left ventricle- is not functioning well.
Your left main coronary artery is serverely narrowed or blocked. this artery supplies most of the blood to the left ventricle.
